Constant update

Hello! This blog post is something different. I usually don’t wear a lot of makeup, even when I am out with friends. In high school I never wore it, and as a freshman in college I realized what I was missing. Every girl in my hall would have such pretty makeup looks, and I was lucky enough to learn a thing or two from one of my friends that was really good at it. She showed me what looks could come from the makeup I own, and I loved the gold eyeshadow she would use.

My friend is really into makeup and she’s taken me to Sephora quite frequently so I’ve learned a bout different makeup products and which ones would look good on me.

That has always been difficult, since I am a women of color and a lot of the makeup tutorials I’ve seen are girls who dont really look like me, but I’ve found some looks that work that I wear a lot. I wanted to try something different, such as this pink look. I tend to wear peach, light pink, maybe gold once in a while. My friend did my eyes and I love the bright pink, as well as the lips and the highlighter I got.

This was a moment where I went out of my comfort zone and really tried experimenting with my makeup, and I loved the result. I am going to try different makeup looks with brighter colors. Let me knw what your go to makeup look is x

My blogging journey

Good morning everyone! Hope you had a great weekend. Today I wanted to post about my journey with this blog of mine. I got the inspiration from a fellow blogger, Francisca. You can find her blog here. She spoke of her journey throughout the years she has had her blog, I wanted to do the same.

I started my blog when I was in high school, in December of 2013, when I was a junior in high school. I made it because I wanted to have a place to keep all my outfit pictures, to look back on them and see how my style has evolved.

I would simply post pictures, and move on with my day. As time went on, I realized people would not simply want to look at pictures but get some back story. I started posting captions along with the blog posts, stating where my clothes is from and why I decided to wear that outfit.

I wanted to plan outfits, so  I would use the website polyvore, which is sadly no longer an active site. I would make outfits I would want to wear in the future, with clothes I wanted similar version of and post those on my blog to still have some content posted over time, even if it wasn’t my personal style.

With life, came a lot of changes. When I moved to a different city for my freshman year of college, I did not update my blog as much. I was focused on classes, making friends and adjusting to being away from home. Luckily my second year, I was able to navigate my time a little more and was updating my Instagram and blog on a more regular basis, which allowed for me to connect with others more than ever before.

I also never thought about making an Instagram or twitter account until later on. About two years after making my blog I realized how vital Instagram would be, that I could connect with more bloggers and see who all was sharing their personal style. The first account I ever made was huesofstylex, which was my old blog name. I made it and decided I hated the pictures I posted so I deleted it when I had 600 followers.

I then made the one I have know, onewithboots that has nearly 1,300 followers. My Instagram growth has not been as positive as I wanted it to be, but I have learned a lot over the years. That is:

interacting with other bloggers is key

be genuine when talking to other bloggers

don’t be afraid to be honest about different parts of your life, there is so much more behind a pretty picture than what is said

Social media has been vital to my blog, I recently reached 100 followers on my twitter account (thank you very much) after having it for 2 years now.

I wanted to say thank you to all of you who have read my blog, it means so much. Let me know a bit about your blogging journey in the comments below.

Sunshine Blogger Award

Hello everyone! I wanted to start this blog post by thanking Jamie, who nominated me for this amazing award. It honestly means the world to me to have such amazing support like hers. Lets get these questions answered below:

Who is your biggest inspiration in the blogging world?

My biggest inspiration is Danielle Bernstein from the amazing style blog known as weworewhat. I found her Instagram and website years ago, she inspired me to share my outfits with other fashionistas via the internet, and really made me want to create a blog that would be as interesting and varied as hers.

When you’re feeling down what is one thing that is guaranteed to make you smile? My family. No matter what, they can make me laugh even if all I do is wanna be mad at them for some small reason that doesn’t really matter.
Summer or Winter? Why?

I’ve always loved winter, in Oregon that’s mainly what we have throughout the year. The cold and rainy weather is what we’re used to, so wearing shorts/skirts/dresses is rare for me. I love laying in bed, reading a book or watching a movie while the rain hits my window.  Drinking hot chocolate and tea at a coffee shop is one of my favorite things, I love that time of year.

What are 3 things you have learnt from blogging?

Stop trying to be other people, find what works for you. People will like your blog if you are solely you, not trying to act like some other person because they are popular.

Don’t force yourself to write if you are not inspired, the result will not be good compared to being excited to share something with your readers.

Success has different time frames for everyone, so you might be disappointed if you haven’t had a blog post in the first 6 months of your blog being created. I’ve had mine since 2013, and only know thought about what I should of been doing all along to have some organic readers, it takes time but it will be so worth it.

What are your 3 favourite things about yourself?

I try to see things in a positive way, to see the bright side of situations and come up with helpful solutions.

I make people genuinely laugh just by being myself, which I always am taken aback by, because I do not find myself to be a funny person at all.

I am observant, just because I am not talking does not mean I do not notice what is going on around me. I am taking everything in.

Are you a dog person or a cat person?

Dogs all the way! Sorry cat lovers.
What is your best childhood memory?

My best childhood memory is when I went to Mexico and California to visit my mom’s side of the family. We ended up spending time with my grandma before she died. My mom would let us go to the corner store by ourselves to buy snacks, and we would dance for hours with all our family, not caring about anything but the dance moves being right.
If you were hosting a dinner party and could invite 5 people, dead or alive, who would you invite?

Frida Kahlo, Rosa Parks, Cesar Chavez, Mahatma Gandi and Winston Churchill.
And what would you cook for them?

Something vegetarian for Gandi, a simple dish. Something like turkey for the rest.
What would your top tip be for practising self love?

Focus on your goals, and how you want to achieve them. If you want to reach one, think if it is for your own tranquility or because outside sources are influencing you. Listen to yourself, not others.
What are your goals for the rest of 2018 and how can we help you smash them?

I want to have my first sponsored blog post, go self hosted and see how close to 2,000 followers I can get on Instagram.

Here are my 11 questions:

What is your favorite fruit?

If you could only wear one color for the rest of your life what would it be and why?

What are your favorite personality traits about yourself?

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Who are your favorite authors?

What music do you like more: country and rock?

Is there anything you wish you knew when you started blogging?

How did you come up with your blog name?

Why did you decide to start your blog?

What hardships have you had to overcome while being a part of the blogging community?

What is the greatest achievement your blog has had thus far?

I am nominating Yossy, Bailey, Phoebe, Becca, Natonya, Soph, Faiza, and Sophie

A high collar

Hello everyone! I am back with another outfit post. This one is far more girly than what I tend to wear, but I wanted to try something new. The high collared shirt is one of my favorites, I love the detailing in the front.

Whenever I wear it I remember my birthday, that was when I bought it. I wanted to buy clothes that I usually stray away from, and I am glad I did.

My personal style is always changing depending on how I feel. It can be girly and feminine, with skirts and dresses, or very casual with jeans and a tshirt.

Whatever I wear, it is important for me to feel comfortable, that I feel good in the clothes, that it is not too loose or too tight. Sometimes I want to wear different clothes, shirts that I can tuck in to my jeans, shirts that are cropped at the belly button. I am not completely comfortable with crop tops at the moment, but I wanted to try them out and see what kind of style I like.

Let me know what kind of style you like to wear.

Underground

Happy Friday everyone! I just wanted to start this post by saying thank you!

Thank you for liking my posts, following me on my social media accounts and giving me so many compliments. Its been a long time since I felt so much support for my blog, and it means so much. Knowing that you all enjoy my content is such an amazing feeling, and it makes me feel so inspired to keep on growing my blog to its full potential.

This blog post is inspired by something my sister said: “you’re really into underground” which refers to music. I was gushing about how excited I am to finally go to see one of my favorite bands in concert, Twenty One Pilots. I am actually wearing one of their shirts as I type this. I discovered their music when I was in high school, in 2014.

I have loved their music since the beginning, when they would get maybe 200,000 views on their videos, back when their songs were far from being on movie soundtracks or radio stations.  When the only albums they had were their self titled debut, and Vessel. It is so amazing to know how a group can succeed so quickly, from unknowns to winning grammys.

They are approaching their third album, and when I listen to their albums I feel a sense of nostalgia, an image of me studying as a senior coming back to my head. I would send my friends their songs. hoping they would listen to the music and agree with me that their music was so unique, so inspirational and poignant, especially when we were teenagers. Tyler and Josh spoke of real life issues, of mental health and how life is not always perfect, their are issues that need to be addressed, and they continue to address them throughout their music, always growing and learning more about life.

There is another artist that I discovered early one, a young teenage girl by the name of Billie Ellish. Her music was infectious, constantly in head, even thought she had only released two songs. I found her music on youtube, listening to different playlists and landing on the song, “She’s broken” which is still one of my favorites from her.

Let me know if you have loved bands before they got mainstream, or any bands you’d like me to listen to.

Happy Thursday everyone! Welcome back to my blog. Today I am talking about the last day of my summer term. Having taken a final, I was done with classes around 2 pm.

My friend and I were both free so we decided to go out for lunch. The restaurant we went to was more popular for hangover food than anything else. The food I bought was a veggie burger, which was not as tasty as I would have liked. The milkshakes we bought were amazing, but they were so big it was hard to finish them.

When ever I go downtown (which is frequently) I always go to a book store, “The Book Bin” since I was little. I can read so many books, especially a variety of history books.

When I got ready, I wanted to wear shorts. These are longer than normal shorts, but are my favorite. The ones I usually wear are really tight, so I tend to stick with ones that are a bit longer, and honestly they look better than regular length ones. The red shirt is one of my favorites from adidas, there streetwear is so simple and comfortable, yet very stylish. With my go to accessories, the outfit become more street stylish, more feminine with earrings and sunglasses.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for my last post of the week.

Celebrating

Happy Wednesday everyone, and welcome to my third day of straight blogging. Doing this has been kind of difficult, especially since I don’t come up with topics very easily.

I want to talk about these photos. These were taken after I went to my old roommates graduation. She was graduating with a bachelor of psychology, and I am so proud of her. She is such a strong, beautiful, independent, smart woman that has achieved so much. Being there to support her was such an amazing feeling, even if we didn’t see her in her cap and gown because of the large amount of people attending.

Luckily we were able to see her at her party, finally meeting her family and celebrating all her accomplishments.

Summer grunge

Hello everyone! This is my second blog post this week, an attempt at posting every day for a week to see how much I can achieve in a week. The idea of doing this was a tweet by an amazing blogger, Ellie. I have so many different outfits I need to blog about, and this week I will be sharing as many as I can.

This outfit includes items I use a lot, and some I found in my closet as I was cleaning it out this past week. The sunglasses and long denim cardigan are my go to when I wanna cover up a bit.

When it comes to my style, I always go for something that makes me comfortable, but also confident about my body and loving every part of me. These black shorts are some of my favorite, even thought when I ordered them online I didn’t realize that they were very high waisted in the back, leaving little to the imagination. This top is one I love, it has a tie in the back of it, making it a really beautiful halter top. What I like about this top is that it is not cropped, it can be tucked in to jeans or shirts.

This style is alluding to my edgier side, I tend to stick to black sometimes, and using a blue (usually denim) to have one piece of my outfit stand out. Even my hair is jet black, so that just adds to the all black vibes I go for sometimes.

Let me know what you think of my outfit, and if you’ve ever thought of posting daily. IMG_0883

Back to the start

These pictures where taken at my old university, the one I transferred out from. I hadn’t been back since I left last year, leaving my friends behind to try and sort out what exactly I wanted to study.

Being there was a sense of deja vu, remembering everything that happened in the last two years and how hard it was to walk away.

I saw no point in staying, my credits weren’t what they needed to be, so I left to try and salvage some time. My best friend from fourth grade goes here, so I thought I was going to lose a friend, but luckily we are just as close as ever.

Coming back I wore an outfit I felt was a bit out of my comfort zone, Something I don’t think I would have worn before, the bandana around my neck, the small sunglasses and the hoop earrings all gave me a sense of confidence.

When o went back I realized that the right choices aren’t always the easiest.

P.s: thank you for 300 followers on my blog and 1,000 on twitter! It means so much to know o have such amazing support from all of you.

Glow

Hello!

Today’s blog post is something I’ve been meaning to share. Being busy with school and work can often lead me to a lot of different emotions, one being how I view myself in this vast world we live in.

There are moments which make me think about how I live my life, and how blessed I am to be able to even type this.

I get so caught up in social media, in being an “it” girl that has thousands of Instagram followers, people that want to know what she wears and where she gets it.

If you must know, I bought this shirt for $6 at a thrift store, the sunglasses were on sale for $10 at Pacsun, the shoes a Christmas present and the jeans were my older sisters. I don’t have name brands to share with you, the most I’ve ever worn is Tommy Hilfiger, and am okay with that right now.

I want to own and wear clothes that do not create a facade about me, but rather have a style all my own. I may never be one of the girls that pop up on the explore page on Instagram with over 1,000 likes but maybe the few that look at my outfits and my accounts get to know someone they genuinely like.

I’m tired of trying to copy the pictures I see on Tumblr, and not use the word “inspired” when I mean, “I wish I was the girl in the picture”

For all those bloggers that do have such beautiful photos and have started careers as bloggers, I am so proud of you and hope your blogs reflect how amazing you are. It’s time for me to do the same.
