Being true to myself

Hi everyone!

Today I will be talking about my favorite thing about my outfits lately. I have been getting more interested in accessories, especially gold ones.

As time goes on I realized how important they are to an outfit. By wearing necklaces, earrings, rings, scarves, belts and so much more, an outfit can look more chic and interesting.

As some of you may know, I have gold hoop earrings, and a necklace saying ‘love that I’ve been wearing constantly.

The following outfit is something is very exciting to wear. It makes me feel like a badass, in all honestly.

I hardly ever wear this crop top I bought years ago from Forever 21, since it has always been a risqué too for me, but now is as good as time as any to try different styles.

These whit jeans from H&M are some of my favorite, especially with the gold zippers on the bottom. The zippers on the pockets also make the outfit a bit more colorful, and fit perfectly in the color scheme of my outfit.

A light denim jacket was a perfect way to top this look off, I used it as a good way to cover up if need be, but I left it in buttoned to show off the necklaces. It was a nice pop of color, the light blue standing out against the white articles of clothing.

The shoes, my go to for so many outfits, even if they are a size too big. When your mom buys shoes on Black Friday, you were them. These have been a staple in my closet, always allowing me to feel comfortable and confident whenever I put them on.

The details of an outfit matter, the sunglasses can be the staple pieces, or maybe the shoes help you stand out. Let me know what accessories you’ve been loving at the moment, and if you are into gold jewelry as much as I am.

My blogging journey

Good morning everyone! Hope you had a great weekend. Today I wanted to post about my journey with this blog of mine. I got the inspiration from a fellow blogger, Francisca. You can find her blog here. She spoke of her journey throughout the years she has had her blog, I wanted to do the same.

I started my blog when I was in high school, in December of 2013, when I was a junior in high school. I made it because I wanted to have a place to keep all my outfit pictures, to look back on them and see how my style has evolved.

I would simply post pictures, and move on with my day. As time went on, I realized people would not simply want to look at pictures but get some back story. I started posting captions along with the blog posts, stating where my clothes is from and why I decided to wear that outfit.

I wanted to plan outfits, so  I would use the website polyvore, which is sadly no longer an active site. I would make outfits I would want to wear in the future, with clothes I wanted similar version of and post those on my blog to still have some content posted over time, even if it wasn’t my personal style.

With life, came a lot of changes. When I moved to a different city for my freshman year of college, I did not update my blog as much. I was focused on classes, making friends and adjusting to being away from home. Luckily my second year, I was able to navigate my time a little more and was updating my Instagram and blog on a more regular basis, which allowed for me to connect with others more than ever before.

I also never thought about making an Instagram or twitter account until later on. About two years after making my blog I realized how vital Instagram would be, that I could connect with more bloggers and see who all was sharing their personal style. The first account I ever made was huesofstylex, which was my old blog name. I made it and decided I hated the pictures I posted so I deleted it when I had 600 followers.

I then made the one I have know, onewithboots that has nearly 1,300 followers. My Instagram growth has not been as positive as I wanted it to be, but I have learned a lot over the years. That is:

interacting with other bloggers is key

be genuine when talking to other bloggers

don’t be afraid to be honest about different parts of your life, there is so much more behind a pretty picture than what is said

Social media has been vital to my blog, I recently reached 100 followers on my twitter account (thank you very much) after having it for 2 years now.

I wanted to say thank you to all of you who have read my blog, it means so much. Let me know a bit about your blogging journey in the comments below.

Sunshine Blogger Award

Hello everyone! I wanted to start this blog post by thanking Jamie, who nominated me for this amazing award. It honestly means the world to me to have such amazing support like hers. Lets get these questions answered below:

Who is your biggest inspiration in the blogging world?

My biggest inspiration is Danielle Bernstein from the amazing style blog known as weworewhat. I found her Instagram and website years ago, she inspired me to share my outfits with other fashionistas via the internet, and really made me want to create a blog that would be as interesting and varied as hers.

When you’re feeling down what is one thing that is guaranteed to make you smile? My family. No matter what, they can make me laugh even if all I do is wanna be mad at them for some small reason that doesn’t really matter.
Summer or Winter? Why?

I’ve always loved winter, in Oregon that’s mainly what we have throughout the year. The cold and rainy weather is what we’re used to, so wearing shorts/skirts/dresses is rare for me. I love laying in bed, reading a book or watching a movie while the rain hits my window.  Drinking hot chocolate and tea at a coffee shop is one of my favorite things, I love that time of year.

What are 3 things you have learnt from blogging?

Stop trying to be other people, find what works for you. People will like your blog if you are solely you, not trying to act like some other person because they are popular.

Don’t force yourself to write if you are not inspired, the result will not be good compared to being excited to share something with your readers.

Success has different time frames for everyone, so you might be disappointed if you haven’t had a blog post in the first 6 months of your blog being created. I’ve had mine since 2013, and only know thought about what I should of been doing all along to have some organic readers, it takes time but it will be so worth it.

What are your 3 favourite things about yourself?

I try to see things in a positive way, to see the bright side of situations and come up with helpful solutions.

I make people genuinely laugh just by being myself, which I always am taken aback by, because I do not find myself to be a funny person at all.

I am observant, just because I am not talking does not mean I do not notice what is going on around me. I am taking everything in.

Are you a dog person or a cat person?

Dogs all the way! Sorry cat lovers.
What is your best childhood memory?

My best childhood memory is when I went to Mexico and California to visit my mom’s side of the family. We ended up spending time with my grandma before she died. My mom would let us go to the corner store by ourselves to buy snacks, and we would dance for hours with all our family, not caring about anything but the dance moves being right.
If you were hosting a dinner party and could invite 5 people, dead or alive, who would you invite?

Frida Kahlo, Rosa Parks, Cesar Chavez, Mahatma Gandi and Winston Churchill.
And what would you cook for them?

Something vegetarian for Gandi, a simple dish. Something like turkey for the rest.
What would your top tip be for practising self love?

Focus on your goals, and how you want to achieve them. If you want to reach one, think if it is for your own tranquility or because outside sources are influencing you. Listen to yourself, not others.
What are your goals for the rest of 2018 and how can we help you smash them?

I want to have my first sponsored blog post, go self hosted and see how close to 2,000 followers I can get on Instagram.

Here are my 11 questions:

What is your favorite fruit?

If you could only wear one color for the rest of your life what would it be and why?

What are your favorite personality traits about yourself?

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Who are your favorite authors?

What music do you like more: country and rock?

Is there anything you wish you knew when you started blogging?

How did you come up with your blog name?

Why did you decide to start your blog?

What hardships have you had to overcome while being a part of the blogging community?

What is the greatest achievement your blog has had thus far?

I am nominating Yossy, Bailey, Phoebe, Becca, Natonya, Soph, Faiza, and Sophie

Back to the start

These pictures where taken at my old university, the one I transferred out from. I hadn’t been back since I left last year, leaving my friends behind to try and sort out what exactly I wanted to study.

Being there was a sense of deja vu, remembering everything that happened in the last two years and how hard it was to walk away.

I saw no point in staying, my credits weren’t what they needed to be, so I left to try and salvage some time. My best friend from fourth grade goes here, so I thought I was going to lose a friend, but luckily we are just as close as ever.

Coming back I wore an outfit I felt was a bit out of my comfort zone, Something I don’t think I would have worn before, the bandana around my neck, the small sunglasses and the hoop earrings all gave me a sense of confidence.

When o went back I realized that the right choices aren’t always the easiest.

P.s: thank you for 300 followers on my blog and 1,000 on twitter! It means so much to know o have such amazing support from all of you.

Glow

Hello!

Today’s blog post is something I’ve been meaning to share. Being busy with school and work can often lead me to a lot of different emotions, one being how I view myself in this vast world we live in.

There are moments which make me think about how I live my life, and how blessed I am to be able to even type this.

I get so caught up in social media, in being an “it” girl that has thousands of Instagram followers, people that want to know what she wears and where she gets it.

If you must know, I bought this shirt for $6 at a thrift store, the sunglasses were on sale for $10 at Pacsun, the shoes a Christmas present and the jeans were my older sisters. I don’t have name brands to share with you, the most I’ve ever worn is Tommy Hilfiger, and am okay with that right now.

I want to own and wear clothes that do not create a facade about me, but rather have a style all my own. I may never be one of the girls that pop up on the explore page on Instagram with over 1,000 likes but maybe the few that look at my outfits and my accounts get to know someone they genuinely like.

I’m tired of trying to copy the pictures I see on Tumblr, and not use the word “inspired” when I mean, “I wish I was the girl in the picture”

For all those bloggers that do have such beautiful photos and have started careers as bloggers, I am so proud of you and hope your blogs reflect how amazing you are. It’s time for me to do the same.

Sights Seen

As I end finals for spring term, I begin to realize how much I miss being on vacation in New Orleans. For my 21st birthday I spent time in NOLA, spending time in museums and cafes with amazing food.

Going to a new place reminded me of how beautiful different parts of the country are. There was so many different places that were full of amazing food, art and culture. I had never seen so many bright buldings, I loved how varied the scenery was.

I always travel to the same places with my family: California and Mexico. This was the first time I had ever flown on an airplane, and I love the feeling of it. Being on an airplane gave me time to relax, and just think about all the fun I would be having in a new place.

We had a beautiful air bnb that we rented, and we spent time cooking at night to try and save money once we realized all that we had spent at restaurants. Being away from home was exciting, everything was new and so interesting.

One of the pictures below is of beignets, which are infamous in New Orleans. We went to Café Du Monde on several occasions, including the day my twin and I turned 21.

The Truth

Hello everyone! i hope you all are having a great week so far. I’ve been busy with finals taking place in the next two weeks, but I wanted to share a story with you all. Its something that I was ashamed of, that made me feel like I was not a “normal” person because of this. Here is the story of my birth, a complicated mix of many emotions.

My twin and I were born on October 27,1996 in Portland, Oregon. Our mom was 6 months pregnant when she went into labor with us. She was rushed to Portland from Salem, where we currently live. The possibility of us surviving was less than 5%, and luckily here I am writing this story.

We were born weighing 1 pound 0 ounces, a first for the Oregon Health and Sciences University hospital where we were born in. We had major complications due to underdevelopment, and were kept in incubators for months. Past Christmas our parents would drive to Portland from Salem every day to see our progress, where we were slowly getting better with the help of medicine and an even better group of nurses that we still see from time to time. The pictures that we’ve seen of us showed our progress, with the first ones being that we easily fit in the palm of our dads hand.

We got to go home after months of anguish, but the struggle was not over. We had to go the hospital continuously for check ups, and make sure we were moving along accordingly. My twin had more issues to face, such as having to use a walker at an early age to learn how to walk, and having physical therapy for appropriate movements of the body.

This experience has always been something I’ve shied away from. It always made me feel weak but now I know that was my strength.  That she and I were given an opportunity that many aren’t lucky enough to have. Knowing that has made me strong, pushing forward when things get rough.

Things have not been hard for me, but education has. It seems I am in this consistent cycle of failure, never knowing how to pass classes I’ve taken multiple times, always making mistakes that get me the same result, and when I try to focus and study more, the results aren’t in my favor. These situations have made me think of giving up, moving and figuring out what I can do that makes me money and that I don’t hate, but I have invested so much time that giving up isn’t an option. I was put on this earth for a reason, even if I dont know what it is yet.

I wanted to thank all 280 of you that follow this blog of mine. Every time the number gets higher I am shocked by all the support that is being given to me. Everyone reading this gives me inspiration to keep working towards my goals, because I know I will get to wherever I need to be.

Light shine through

Good morning everyone! Happy Monday! These last few weeks have been filled with exams, quizzes and papers. I am over half way done with this term and everything Is coming to fruition in rather quickly. I’ve been spending most of my days sitting in my room trying to study for all my classes, and ultimately picking one over the other which I have tried to get better at.

This post is something I just wanted to share when I was bored laying in bed probably just going through my phone instead of studying.

My window is a rather big in my room and the light comes through the curtain we got. I moved some things off my sisters white desk. I used my self timer to take these pictures because I wanted to have mini photo shoot in a room with the desk in with the chair we had bought.

I took some pictures of me in this dress I bought from forever 21 wearing make up I had done five minutes before to take these pictures. I love how makeup looks in the sun light, especially highlighter.

Let me know what you think of this outfit and what if you’ve done any impromptu photo shoots you’ve ended up really enjoying.
